Description
(1)These are two exceptional, eye-catching obsidian preforms for knapping spearheads or knives. They represent some of the best obsidian in my preform collection and were accumulated over the years from Internet purchases, rough obsidian rock purchased in Quartzite, Arizona, and rock dug up near Burns and Glass Buttes, Oregon.
The photographs against the green background were taken in the shade, while the photos of the individual preforms were taken in the sunlight. The actual colors and patterns, however, are even more beautiful in the direct sunlight, as the preforms are covered with water and rotated on different angles to reflect the sunlight. They do not have any cracks and are ideal for flat-knapping or FOG (flake-over-grind) knapping.
The sizes are shown in the first two photos and additional details are provided below, beginning on the left in the first two photos:
The first preform is translucent black obsidian and has dark stripes when held up to the sun. It is a little under 3/8” in thickness;
The second is a beautiful gray-banded obsidian preform with a gold-colored band. It is a little less than 7/16" thick.
Note
: Obsidian like I am selling on eBay is becoming increasingly difficult to find these days, as many of the pits in Northern California and Southern Oregon have been closed by the federal government.
I even have difficulty finding high-quality obsidian at the rock and gem shows in Quartzite, Arizona.
